Plot

After my mind map I worked on a summary/synopsis of my novel yesterday. With the amount that I've been banging on about the first draft it felt strange not to share the plot with you all.

This is just the start of it obviously (I'll fill in the rest as each story's plot and link is more solid) but it should give you a rough idea:

'The Decalogue' consists of ten short stories loosely based upon each of the Ten Commandments and set in modern-day Dublin. The Dubliners each face a moral dilemma in a society where Catholic values clash with an encroaching materialist and permissive way of life.
(I must add that 'The Dubliners' refer to my characters and not the traditional Irish band. Hmm, maybe I should change that bit.)

It sounds good, I can't wait to see it in print!

Thanks Beccy! It sounds a little too serious at the moment, will have to work on it. It's not a religious tract at all, the 10 commandments is more of a loose theme than anything. And I'm hoping bits of it is funny!

My novel was originally going to be linked short stories, but then it all got a bit more complicated than that ... yours sounds great though. can't wait to read it!

Angie, you're so sweet! Thanks!

Helen, thanks! Can't wait to read yours either, am interested in hearing how your book evolved...do you have a post about it?

It sounds fascinating - brilliant concept. I'm astounded by how cohesively you've got it all planned. Well, astounded and a little bit envious.

Keep up the good work, you're doing really well.

I started off with two short sories which were linked because they were both about people accidentally killing someone (which led to the title of Accidentally On Purpose). I originally intended to then link to other short stories on the same theme. Then I realised that letting the characters from the two different stories interact with each other would make a better novel. What I tend to do now is to work to a series of prompts which create back story and then take it from there. (I posted about this on 4 January). I've still got a very long way to go though ... so plenty of time for ideas to develop further!

Jen, that's so kind of you but I don't feel like it's planned at all! Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the links worked out, they are nagging away at me...

Helen thanks for that, it's always very interesting to hear about the development of ideas and how they change. Am watching with interest!

Sounds like a fab idea with lots of places it could go. Can't wait to read it :-)

Have you seen the film The Ten? It follows a similar theme, although from a US angle. All very interesting!

It sounds intriguing, very clever. Look forward to reading it.

Catherine I haven't heard of that film, will have to check it out. When I first came up with the idea someone pointed out that a Polish director had made a film called The Decalogue based on the same idea...I was raging that I didn't think of it first!

Debs, thanks! I hope you get the opportunity!
