Cervical Check

So I'm not off to Barcelona until the crack of dawn tomorrow morning, but I've done most of my packing already. Can you tell I'm excited?

But before I go I wanted to share some important information with you. On Saturday Ireland rolled out Cervical Check, a national screening programme that provides free smear tests to all women aged 25-60. All you need is your PPS number.

As it is quite new not all the practitioners who offer it are listed yet, but my local family planning clinic (IFPA) on Cathal Brugha Street offers free smear tests under this scheme. Regular smears could save your life - so if it's been more than three years since your last smear, please don't delay in booking a test.

Very important post and a good reminder to us all.

Thanks for the reminder. Three years can slip by too quickly and if you've moved or whatever, it's an easy thing to forget.

Have a great time In BarcelOOOna!

Debs, my mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer twice so awareness and screening are subjects very close to my heart.

Lane, you're right it is so easy to forget your last test. I'll do my best to have a good time!

Eeewugh, it is horrible, but small price to pay for checking yourself out.

Have a FABULOUS time in Barcelona.

Have wonderful time in Barcelona!

That's great that there doing it free do you normally pay in Ireland?

JJ, it'll be difficult to have a good time but I'll try my best!

M&T, cheers! Healthcare is expensive here compared to the NHS, 50E to see a doctor and 16-20E for a smear test - and now it's completely free (which it should have been ages ago!)

Close to my heart too, having had cervical cancer myself. I nearly didn't go for my check-up either as we were going away the same day. God knows what made me go, but I thank my lucky stars on a regular basis that I did :o)

Karen, I'm so sorry to hear that, but how fortunate that you went when you did - I had a smear test today as well. Thank you for sharing that and I'm so glad that you are well.

It's great that they're offering it free since it's so important to get checked (but I heartily second the eewugh, JJ!).

Have so much fun tomorrow!

A good reminder. I think it's really important to remember that the biggest risk factor for cervical cancer is NOT having cervical smears. So however yucky it is - it's worth going!

Have a great holiday! Your post reminded me of how wonderful and much maligned the British NHS is. I've lived here for over 20 years now and have free smear test available every three years.Okay, its bady managed but the NHS as a concept is a wonderful thing. Yay for the NHS and for this much needed service in Ireland.

Errr...is that a guilty flush creeping up my cheeks?

Thanks, Yvonne, I'll consider myself told and sort it out.

Thanks for that reminder. I'm way overdue.

I go for them and I know how valuable they are, but I hate them so much! Dignity goes out of the window.

That's great. I wish the US would offer free health care to women. It's around $200.00 to get an exam now.
