Ooh, I love posts like this! Funny how most writers prefer either music OR silence isn't it? I fall in the middle, just to be awkward. I like noise, but only at a very low level. Unless I'm struggling with a particular scene/sentence/idea, then I get VERY STROPPY with any sort of noise at all.
It didn't come up the first time, for some reason, but there's a little award for you over at mine :o)

I'm the same really - I don't mind a bit of noise, but if I hit a rough patch my blood pressure explodes at the slightest shout, beep or bang!
Those sort of interviews really tickle my inner voyeur. Like that Writer's rooms piece in the Observer (or Saturday Guardian?). I guess most aspiring writers feel like there might a wee clue in there somewhere about how to make that transition to household name :-)
Welcome PJ! I think you're spot on about looking for clues. Maybe it's because writing is such a solitary activity, we can't help looking to others for reassurance? (If *insert published writer* does the same thing as me, I must be on the right track!)
I work with background noise like the radio best. But put headphones on me and I can't concentrate at all - it's becomes too immediate and far more interesting than work!
